My Top Ten Audition Tips

Hello, friends! I am coming to you with a post that isn't related to beauty or fashion. It's related to my passion of the theatre! You guys may or may not know that I've been acting for a long time, and I do shows pretty frequently. I am by no means a professional actress or an expert in the theatre, but I just wanted to give you some tips on what to do in a theatre audition! These tips are more relevant to stage performing, but can be applicable to film and television, as well.

  1. Prepare your material: Know exactly what you'll have to do at the audition. When I audition, I'm usually required to have a one-minute monologue, a song, and learn a dance. Start preparation for auditions at least a month before they happen. This involves finding a monologue and a song.
  2. Research the show: Make sure that you do your research on the show you're auditioning for! This is key! How can you go into a show without knowing anything about it? Read the synopsis, the character breakdown, everything. This will make it much easier for you when you audition.
  3. Find the perfect monologue: When you find your perfect monologue, you'll know. It should be something you feel comfortable performing, with a character close to the character you're auditioning for. Find a monologue that you love and rehearse it in front of you're mirror until you know it by heart.
  4. Be humble: When at the audition, be humble. Don't let your ego get in the way of your performance. It's better not to tell people what role you're auditioning for unless they ask you. It's fine to talk to people, but don't let that distract you from what you came to the audition to do. Just stay humble and modest.
  5. Wear appropriate clothing: When performing in front of whoever is going to be judging your performance, wear something that you feel comfortable in. Though, it would be wise to make sure it's professional. Also, make sure to keep your hair out of your face. If you need to dance, it's fine to bring clothes that you can move in to change into.
  6. Be confident: When walking into the audition, it can be scary. However, you need to walk into that audition room with confidence. Walk with your shoulders back, smile, and be polite.
  7. Stay in character: When performing, even if you mess up, stay in character! It's okay if you mess up, just don't let the director know that you did. Keep going!
  8. You are always being watched: The director is always watching you, so be sure to behave with professionalism and be kind to everyone. The director won't want to work with you if you are rude and obnoxious.
  9. No Phone: Put your phone away! Far, far away! Having your phone out or on is very unprofessional and is not looked at fondly in the audition world.
  10. Breathe: As scary as auditions are, put that behind you and just share your gifts. Remember that you're there to show them what you've got. Just breathe, smile, and get through it.
